Choleast (red yeast rice powder) is derived from Monascus purpureus WENT, an organism grown on rice. After centuries of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it was discovered that red yeast rice is a potent inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. The fatty acids, phytosterols, isoflavones, and proteins in Choleast help maintain a healthful balance of cholesterol and related blood lipids in the body. Thorne Research's Choleast combines red yeast rice powder with coenzyme Q10.
